UPDATE: Email sent out to all participants of this topic from the Dean (Education) Key Points:
- Thank you for all of the feedback you have offered, the Topic Coordinator and I have worked a way forward.
- We want to assure you that we know it hasn’t been all bad because we have received such constructive feedback and have read those emails highlighting what has worked as well. So, we know there is some work to do moving forward but our intent here is to respond in full and work our way forward.
- The Topic Coordinator is grateful for your concern and care for her in outlining the concerns that you have.
- Where the specific concern raised was in relation to the feedback that was received on an individual assessment, we will facilitate an independent review process. Where I have received those examples, I will send those off and you will hear back from the person facilitating the review
- We will review all marks and the grade distribution at the Exam Board before marks are finalised to no disadvantage.
- COVID-19: As per the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students) emails, any student who has made a meaningful attempt at all assignments and has not passed will be given an alternative and supplementary assessment. All students who have been graded in this Topic will be able to apply for a Non-Graded Pass.
- We have agreed that we will put together a series of professional seminars for you, that you are welcome but not required to attend. We have received feedback about areas that you would like to explore in more detail (eg Applied literacies in Health and PE, the Multimodal Teacher, Literacies across the Arts, Critical literacies across curriculum, etc).
- We also commit to redeveloping this Topic and would welcome those who have made suggestions about improvements to become part of our codesign team. We are grateful that you provided us with such extensive feedback and have such commitment to your studies. We look forward to continuing to work with you and perhaps meeting you in our Professional Seminars.
Past Advocacy
On the 4th of July, many of the Third Year and Masters students began their placement, but not all students were fortunate enough to be awarded a place. Those who were not placed are expected to do their placement at another time and may even require a further 6 months at uni just to complete all compulsory placement components. FESA is advocating for Education students, and is engaged in talks with the Dean to reassess the enrolment intake strategy, so that all students can be placed at an appropriate school and time within their degree. We want our current and future students to have the best university experience possible to prepare them for their future careers.
UPDATE:
The petition has led to communication with the Dean about how the process is being changed. The intake cannot be changed, as they are predicting a job market 4 years down the track. It will also only result in people going to other universities, so there will be the same issue of a flooded job market. The university is looking at other entry processes to ensure students are here for the right reasons. They are also pushing for more international connections, including international placements. Our President is also in communications with the Dean about having a student rep on the school commitee, to help consider students' perspectives in decision making.
